A practice built on
considered preparation
Calderstone Pennant was founded on a simple observation: most adults lack not the intelligence to manage their finances, but the right starting materials.
← Back to HomeThe Founding Story
Calderstone Pennant was established in Kuala Lumpur in 2016 by a group of educators and financial practitioners who shared a concern about how financial concepts were being communicated — or more often, not communicated — to working adults in Malaysia.
The founders observed that much of what passed for financial education was either too abstract (academic theory with no practical connection) or too directive (thinly veiled product promotion dressed as education). Neither served people well.
Taking inspiration from the careful work of an apothecary — where every preparation is documented, measured, and checked for interactions before being dispensed — the founders created a different kind of financial education practice. One where each concept is catalogued for its composition, its purpose, its known interactions with other financial ideas, and its suitability for different situations.
The name Calderstone Pennant reflects this founding spirit: Calderstone, referencing the cool stone of a dispensary shelf where preparations are stored and organised; Pennant, a flag or marker indicating purpose and orientation.

What guides our practice
Measured Communication
We say what is knowable, acknowledge what is uncertain, and do not overstate the implications of any concept. Financial education should inform, not alarm or excite.
Contextual Accuracy
Every example, figure, and reference is drawn from the Malaysian financial context. We do not borrow frameworks from other markets and apply them without adjustment.
Participant Respect
We treat participants as capable adults who can make their own decisions once they have the right information. There is no pressure, no urgency, and no judgment.
Education Team
Our facilitators come from backgrounds in financial practice, adult education, and curriculum design — each bringing a different angle to the work of financial understanding.
Roslan Ahmad
Roslan spent fifteen years in retail banking before moving into adult education. He developed the formulary approach that structures all three programmes and oversees curriculum quality.
Nurul Liyana
Nurul leads the investing and lifetime planning programmes, drawing on her background in wealth management education and her experience facilitating group learning sessions across KL and the Klang Valley.
Chong Wei Liang
Wei Liang manages participant experience, from initial enquiry through to programme completion. He also facilitates the personal finance introductory programme with particular attention to participants new to structured financial thinking.
Quality and Professional Protocols
The standards we apply to content, facilitation, and participant experience are not aspirational — they are operational requirements we hold ourselves to in every programme.
Content Review Process
All programme materials are reviewed annually against current Malaysian financial regulations, EPF guidelines, and relevant statutory updates. Outdated examples are removed and replaced.
Participant Data Protection
Participant information is held in accordance with the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act 2010. We do not share contact details with third parties and do not use enquiry data for unsolicited marketing.
Facilitator Standards
Education facilitators maintain current awareness of the Malaysian financial landscape and participate in continuing education each year. Facilitation methodology is reviewed and updated as adult learning practice evolves.
Clear Scope of Practice
We maintain a clear boundary between financial education and financial advice. Facilitators do not make product recommendations, personal portfolio comments, or investment suggestions of any kind.
Participant Feedback Integration
Each programme cohort provides structured feedback at completion. Observations on clarity, pacing, and relevance are collated and reviewed by the curriculum team for the following programme iteration.
Materials Accuracy
Workbooks, reference materials, and recorded sessions include stated preparation dates. Participants can see when content was last reviewed and flag any discrepancies for our team to assess.
Calderstone Pennant operates from its main location at 42 Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur, a position that places it within the city's financial district — appropriate for an organisation whose subject matter is the practical understanding of financial life. Programmes are available to individuals working in any sector and at any stage of their financial knowledge.
The practice does not operate as a financial advisory service and does not hold a Capital Markets Services Licence. All educational content is designed to build conceptual understanding and does not constitute advice regarding any specific financial product, investment strategy, or personal financial decision.
Over the years, Calderstone Pennant has refined its programme structure in response to participant feedback and changes in the Malaysian financial environment. The current formulary of three programmes reflects what has been most consistently useful to adult learners at different stages of their engagement with financial concepts.
Enquiries are welcome from individuals, as well as from organisations interested in workplace financial education for their staff. The practice is open to discussing programme adaptations for group settings, subject to curriculum scope.
